Book a workshop

Having facilitated workshops since my freshman year at college (2007!),
I’m a huge fan of the art of a skill share. I teach in a playful and accessible way, because otherwise, what’s the point? Participants leave sessions inspired to create with a new skill in their toolkit and a bonus of making new friends.

Below are workshops I currently offer for half-day and full-day sessions.

Zines For All

A zine (pronounced “zeen”), is a self-published, handmade booklet that is photocopied and distributed in relatively small quantities for the purpose of sharing ideas, experiences, and perspectives, often of historically marginalized or underrepresented subcultures and social movements. Anyone can make a zine!

Short for fanzine, zines can encompass a variety of subjects such as music, cooking, gardening, politics, travel, personal journals, or anything of interest to the zinester (the person who made the zine). Zines can be filled with drawings, photos, poetry, essays, comics: unedited viewpoints and personal experiences of the zinester - and are photocopied, folded, and stapled.

In this workshop, participants will be guided through a brief history of zines & their cultural significance before being provided step-by-step instructions and guidance to create a template of their own with copies to take home.

A variety of zines will be provided for inspiration, as well as all supplies required. No previous skills necessary. This workshop is great for collage artists, writers, photographers, or anyone interested in sharing their craft.

Chaos Poetry

Inspired by my own zine series Haikus Your Own Adventure, Chaos Poetry borrows elements of Exquisite Corpse & traditional poetry to create playfully surreal games out of an art form that can sometimes be intimidating. Let’s fix that.

Participants will spend the session creating silly, sentimental, and smart poetry of a variety of styles that eliminate the pressure of poetry with a capital P. We will play with familiar styles such as limericks and haikus, but with twists such as mixing and matching lines from our own poetry, to a game of musical chairs with words. Words will be pulled from hats and belly laughs will be had in this unique workshop. You won’t look at poetry the same again.

We will work individually and collaboratively to create poems and prose consisting of words that have never before been combined, stretching our creativity and imaginations. Each participant will get to take home copies of their work and an impromtu anthology of the work created with their peers.

Camp Crafts

Oh snap! Let's relive our 90s summer camp craft days by making beaded lizard keychains, friendship bracelets, and those box-stitched gummy lanyards, with a soundtrack of all of our favorite boy bands. Fruit punch stains not included.

Participants will get a chance to make all the nostalgic crafts of our youth, or even from before our time if you missed out on camp days prior to Y2K. Instructions for every style of keychain and friendshop with be demonstrated and printed in an easy to understand format. Some styles will be familiar, and some will have modern twists, like the pride flag knife beaded keychain I currently keep on my backpack. Options are customized to the interests of the event and I can even start your box braid for you. Each participant will have multiple pieces to take home with them and all materials will be provided.
